Parietal cell vagotomy in the Surgical Treatment of Duodenal Ulcer

Abstract
There are many kinds of surgical methods in the treatment of chronic duodenal ulcer, such as subtotal gastric resection(Billroth II ), vagotomy & antrectomy, truncal vagotomy and drainage procedure, selective vagotomy and pyloroplasty, and parietal cell vagotomy without drainage. Holle and Hart reported the first clinical applications, with parietal cell vagotomy and pyloroplasty in 1967. Parietal cell vagotomy without drainage was performed in patients with chronic duodenal ulcer by Johnston, and Wilkinson in 1970, reported series in 1975 by Goligher.
Goligher suggests that parietal cell vagotomy may prove to be the ideal minimal operation for chronic duodenal ulcer, relatively free of side effects and good effects in most cases but needs more experimental and-follow-up study for many cases. The purpose of this study is to introduce the surgical technique and 31 cases of preliminary report of parietal cell vagotomy without drainage, which were treated at National Medical Center and Surgical Dept. of Vienna University from June, 1973 to May, 1976.
